National Liver Cancer Treatment Centers in the United States

An estimated 42,230 adults in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer.

Additionally, an estimated 33,000 adults in the U.S. will be diagnosed with secondary liver cancer due to colorectal cancer metastases. Whether you already received a diagnosis or think you should get checked, USA Oncology Centers is there for you at each step.

Thankfully, you can get screened and treated for primary liver cancer and prevent it from progressing with our leading-edge, non-surgical treatments.

If you have received a diagnosis of secondary liver cancer due to colorectal cancer metastases, our oncology centers provide liver cancer treatments, such as Y-90 Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) and Transarterial Chemoembolization or TACE.

We can also provide Venous Access devices such as Venous Ports and Tunneled venous catheters to administer fluids, medication, and other therapies into the bloodstream.

Signs and Symptoms of Primary and Secondary Liver Cancer

Primary liver cancer refers to malignant cells that develop within your liver. Secondary liver cancer occurs when malignant cells spread from somewhere else in your body to your liver. The liver is the dominant metastatic site for patients with colorectal liver cancer. Around 70% of people with colorectal cancer eventually develop liver metastases.1 This is because the blood supply from the intestines is directly connected to your liver through a large blood vessel known as the hepatic portal vein. Some signs and symptoms of colorectal liver metastases include:

  • Blood in your stool
  • Fever, even low-grade
  • Weakness or chronic fatigue
  • Jaundice: yellowish eyes and skin
  • Extreme nausea or dizziness
  • Disinterest for food or drinks
  • A hard lump under your ribcage
  • Significant weight loss
  • Swelling in your belly or abdomen
  • White, chalky stool
  • Dark yellow or brown urine

If you experience any of the symptoms above, it’s important to contact an oncologist as soon as possible. Specialists like those at USA Oncology Centers understand how to properly treat symptoms of primary and secondary liver cancer. Our physicians are experts in their field and know how to recommend the right course of action after diagnosis.

Non-Surgical Liver Cancer Treatments

At our state-of-the-art facilities, our focus is to keep you comfortable throughout the process. Typical hospital settings have thousands of people going in and out with various diseases, but our outpatient facilities provide a quiet and clean space that gives solace to patients with immunodeficiencies. We also offer virtual doctor visits so that you can consult with a medical professional about your specific condition without the need to be there in person.

Patients always come first, and our doctors are there to listen to your concerns and explain confusing medical lingo. USA Oncology Centers has an exceptional team of specialists who are ready to assist you. We use advanced ablation and embolization technology, which helps our interventional radiologists precisely target the tumor(s) while avoiding surgery.

After you have a diagnosis, your specialist at USA Oncology Centers will discuss your liver cancer treatment options and make sure you feel confident about your choice. We provide minimally invasive treatments in our office. Each office-based procedure is quick and allows you to return and recover in the comfort of your own home.

We offer the following non-surgical procedures at our treatment centers:

USA Oncology Centers helps patients live healthier, more active lives. We provide precision-based cancer procedures in an outpatient setting to make liver cancer treatment as stress-free as possible.

What Are the Benefits of Interventional Oncology Treatment?

Interventional oncology, a specialty field of interventional radiology, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using targeted minimally invasive procedures performed with ultrasound guidance. Interventional, office-based techniques allow our patients to avoid a painful, long recovery, as well as an overnight hospital stay. Your liver cancer treatment is customized for your specific needs, and our doctors can help you determine if you are a candidate for Y-90 SIRT, TACE, or Comprehensive Treatment Management.

Y-90 SIRT

Depending on your unique situation, Y-90 SIRT can target liver tumors directly with high doses of radiation while sparing healthy tissue and reducing injury to the liver. At USA Oncology Centers your Y-90 SIRT treatment can be completed between cycles of chemotherapy to minimize disrupting other treatments.

Another benefit of Y-90 SIRT is that it can be used to treat inoperable liver tumors. Tumors that have spread to the liver can also be precisely and effectively targeted with Y-90 SIRT.

In addition, patients tolerate Y-90 SIRT very well, and a vast majority of side effects are considered mild. Clinical trials have also shown that Y-90 SIRT can significantly extend a patient’s overall survival and improve their quality of life.

TACE

If you are a candidate for Transarterial Chemoembolization or (TACE), a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment for liver cancer, you have the benefit of receiving local chemotherapy with a procedure called embolization.

TACE attacks the cancer by delivering a high concentration of chemotherapy directly into the tumor, and it does so without exposing the entire body to the effects of those drugs. Then, the procedure cuts off the tumor’s blood supply, trapping the anti-cancer drugs at the site and depriving the tumor of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to grow.

In addition, the benefits of a TACE treatment typically last for an average of 10 to 14 months, depending on the type of tumor. TACE treatment can be repeated if the cancer starts to grow again, and other types of therapy may be combined with TACE.

COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT MANAGEMENT

USA Oncology Centers knows that liver cancer treatment is complex. When someone has a cancer diagnosis, or learns that their cancer has spread, it can feel overwhelming. At USA Oncology Centers, we treat the whole person, and we are committed to our patients. We want you to know your treatment options and be a partner with us in planning your care.

We provide non-surgical ablation therapy for liver, kidney, and lung cancer. These procedures are typically performed under ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or computed tomography (CT) guidance. Our specialists insert a tiny needle through the skin in order to burn or freeze the tumor. The sophistication of the imaging equipment used for live guidance allows precise targeting of the tumor. As with the intra-arterial therapies, the healthy tissue is left untouched, which can minimize or even eliminate any toxic side effects.
